[Civil War] Brigadier General Joseph B. Carr Autograph Letter Signed. "Jos. B. Carr." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", on blue-line "Head Quarters Exterior Line of Defences" letterhead, Yorktown, July 6, 1864. Written to John A. Griswold, president of the Rensselaer Iron Works which forged parts for the USS Monitor and a member of the U. S. Congress, thanking him his help in securing a nomination for the rank of brigadier general and for "the very great interest you have taken in my behalf." The top left corner is torn away, not affecting the text; two horizontal and one vertical fold crease.

General Joseph B. Carr (1828-1895) was promoted to brigadier general for gallantry after the Battle of Malvern Hill, but the appointment was not approved by the Senate until two years later. It was finally confirmed on June 30, 1864, the date of rank being March 30, 1863.
