[City of Austin]. Thomas Barnett Autograph Document Twice Signed. Two pages (on two sheets, recto only), 7.75" x 9.75", Austin, January 23, 1838. Barnett was serving as chief justice of Austin County when he penned this document certifying that William Hunter had been elected mayor of San Felipe de Austin in an election held January 14, 1838. The second page contains a statement by Hunter, dated August 9, 1838, stating that "I this day resign holding the office of Mayor of this Corporation." Docketed on the verso of the final page. Overall toning with separation of the folds beginning at the edges. 1.25" tear at the upper right edge of the second page. Small spots of foxing scattered about.

Thomas Barnett (1798-1843), a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, first came to Texas as one of Austin's Old Three Hundred, receiving a league of land in modern Fort Bend County on July 10, 1824. He served for one year as comisario of the district of Victoria and as alcalde of San Felipe de Austin the following year (1829). In 1835, he attended the Consultation as a representative of Austin, sat on the subsequent General Council, and attended the Convention of 1836. He was appointed chief justice of Austin County (the position he held when he wrote the above document) by President Sam Houston. He went on to serve in the Republic of Texas House of Representatives from 1838 until 1840.
