    Description

[Circular] Hardeman's Brigade: General Orders 155 and 13. Confederate field printed circular signed in print by S. Cooper, Adjutant and Inspector General, one page, 5.5" x 10.25", Richmond, VA, November 28, 1863 and February 3, 1864. A field printing of two orders from Richmond regarding uniform allowances and forage procedures.

William P. "Old Gotch" Hardeman was a Texas Ranger, soldier, and public servant. Immediately upon his arrival in Texas in 1835 he joined the resistance movement against Mexico, subsequently serving for a number of years in the Texas Rangers. After voting in favor of secession in 1861, Hardeman raised an 800 man troop from Guadalupe and Caldwell. Hardeman fought and was wounded at Valverde, and he later commanded a successful defense of Confederate supplies at Albuquerque against much stronger Union forces. He was later assigned to the Gulf theater and it was at about this time that General Orders 155 and 13 were issued from Richmond, dated November 28, 1863 and February 3, 1864 respectively. General Order 155 instructs that officers must provide "the Quartermaster an account of the expenditures for forage, which will exhibit the amount expended, the number of animals, and the time during which they shall have been subsisted." General Order 13 details procedures for the accounting of uniforms issued to soldiers, and warns company commanders that "By failing to account for clothing received by them for issue to their men, they render themselves liable to be charged with its value, and a stoppage of pay to the amount." With minor age toning and a few faint creases at margins, else fine.

Following the issue of these General Orders, Hardeman went on to participate in Gen. Richard Taylor's Red River campaign in Louisiana, eventually rising to the command of the Fourth Texas Cavalry. After successful campaigns at Yellow Bayou and Franklin, Hardeman was promoted to brigadier general.
