[Charles Guiteau] Anonymous Autograph Postcard. One page, 5.25" x 3", on cardstock, Washington, D.C., September 12, 1881. Front of card bears a large "US Postal Card" vignette at top. Following his July 2, 1881 attempt on President Garfield's life, Charles Guiteau was arrested and incarcerated. The president lingered at death's door for several months, finally succumbing to his wounds on September 19, 1881. Just one week prior to the president's death, this postcard was dropped in the mail by an unidentified correspondent. The postcard is addressed "To the Governor Of The Jail in wh. Guitteau [sic] is incarcerated," and reads in full: "Dear Sir, As the case now looks, the life of our beloved President is about despaired of. If a telegram reaches you of a fatal termination, I would advise you to recover all the other inmates of the Jail to some other prison, as there is an organization here, where members are bound by the most solemn oath to slay the assassin, if the President dies - even if dinamite [sic] has to be called into requisition. It will be done as sure as fact. The entire force of the U.S.A. cannot save him. I know the men composing the 'Avengers.' As it turned out, Guiteau's safety was endangered by a local citizen and by one of his jailers, both of whom attempted to shoot Guiteau, neither of which succeeded. Moderate toning with minor wear at corners and edges.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
