    Description

"Capt. Jack" Crawford: Autographed Copy of His Book The Poet Scout, with His Letter of Presentation to Elizabeth Custer. Crawford, who scouted for Custer, revered his memory. He writes in 1886: "Knowing and loving the General as I did, I trust that you will appreciate my humble references to him..." Always the self-promoter, Crawford added: "If after reading it you could send me just a sentence or two giving your estimate of its merits I should esteem it a favor." The book is boldly autographed below the frontispiece engraving of Crawford: "Yours truly, J. W. Crawford 'Capt. Jack'" (Note: this is actually signed, not the edition with facsimile signature below his portrait.) The 5.25" x 8" letter, written on the stationery of his publisher, is in excellent condition. The cloth cover of the book shows moderate wear, but contents excellent. Also included is an 8.5" x 11" flyer promoting an appearance by Crawford, on verso of which is a pencil note signed "Ben", congratulating him on his book and accomplishments as a plainsman and Army scout.
