    Description

[Battle of Shiloh]. Detailed Letter From Daniel S. Donelson, 2nd Confederate Infantry, Describing the Aftermath of the Battle of Shiloh. Two pages, 7.75" x 12.5", Head Quarters 2nd Confederate Regiment, Corinth, Mississippi, April 15, 1862, to his mother. The Battle of Shiloh, fought April 6-7, 1862, claimed over 20,000 Union and Confederate troops. The carnage and ferocity of fighting shocked both armies.

Donelson's letter is well written and descriptive, providing a first-hand look at the battle from the average Confederate soldier's vantage point. Donelson writes, in part: "I have had no rest since the Battle, nearly all the officers have gone away either wounded or sick. I have been acting Brigade & Reg't adjutant both which has kept me busy all day & till from 12 to 2 at night...The army is being organized again as rapidly as possible (it need not be denied we were terribly crippled by the late fight) & we will be in a condition to fight again in about one week. Sunday morning we won a glorious but dearly bought victory & Sunday evening Genl Johnstons determination to press his column forward to capture their whole army cost him his life as well as many other gallant soldiers... I shot at the enemy with one of his own guns... I picked up several very fine swords but none of them had scabbards - I brought no trophy from the field except an Enfield rifle & accoutrements & two fine canteens. Joe is now dressed in a fine blue Yankee uniform...". The paper has toned and displays some moderate foxing and dirtiness. One small hole at approximately the center of the letter trivially affects the text. A fine first-hand account, worthy of more research.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
