    Description

[Battle of Gettysburg]. John B. Bachelder Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 8.5" x 11", on his personal letterhead, Chelsea [Massachusetts], n. d. [circa 1870]. Bachelder writes to Major John W. Daniel, a Confederate officer and member of Early's Division who participated in the battle, regarding a lecture he has recently given, in part: "I am in the receipt of a copy of the Richmond Dispatch of Oct. 29th which contains a report of a lecture delivered by you...on the battle of Gettysburg, which...I consider superior to any document I have read on that battle. Having devoted a great deal of study to that subject, it is interesting to me to find the statements of another, who had as good an opportunity as yourself, so fully coincided with y own conclusions."

He continues: "I take liberty to send you a copy of the government map of that field. It may not be known to you that I am at present under contract to complete this work by representing thereon, the positions of every regiment and battery of both armies during six phases of the battle." He then requests Daniel's input on the action of his unit "...which I have traced pretty carefully through the battle; the only feature not perfectly clear is Gordon's movements when sent off to your left which he did not consider of sufficient importance to report. But the reports generally of Ewell's and Hill's Corps are so finely written...that the movements can be readily made out. I am having more trouble with Longstreet's Corps, the reports of which are very incomplete." He concludes by requesting the "...name, regiment and address of some officers of that [Longstreet's] corps...with whom I could correspond."

Smoothed folds are weakened in places. Main horizontal fold is showing some separation at the edges. Moderate to heavy toning along the folds. Scattered spots of staining and ink smudging.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
