[Battle of Gettysburg]. Efner McNall Autograph Letter Signed. Six pages, 5" x 8", Westminster [Maryland], July 3, 1863. Written to his family, McNall, 6th Regiment New York Volunteer Cavalry, describes the struggle at Gettysburg. The army crossed the Potomac River in pursuit of Gen. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia in their invasion of Maryland, maneuvering and skirmishing with the enemy along the way, finally entering the town of Gettysburg. On Wednesday, July 1, "...the rebs advanced...and we went out to meet them our Brigade was drawed up in line of battle on the right...the Rebs had two Batterys firing...the rebs thought there was nothing but Cavalry over there so the whole of Ewels [sic] Corps marched right towards us but the infantry soon opened on them and the fight became very hard about that time Generel [sic] Reynolds was mortally wounded and afterwards died we took three whole regt's of rebs then about 1000 in all." Soon the 11th Corps arrived and McNall's brigade fell back, but were soon under fire from one of their own batteries, "...killing one man in the ninth NY and one wounded..."

His division "...left the battlefield..." the following day and "...came to Taneytown [Maryland]..." a short distance to the south. Optimistic, McNall believes "...we will give old Lee a second thrashing before he crosses the Potomac again." Meade's army only half-heartedly pursued Lee, the latter making his retreat safely back into Virginia. Areas of staining throughout, especially along the edges and folds of pages four through six. Some separation at the intersections of the folds with no loss of text.
