Sam Houston Treasury Warrant for "protection of the frontier"

[Augustus Tomlinson's Texas Rangers]. Sam Houston Texas State Treasury Warrant Signed as Texas Governor. One partially-printed page, 8" x 3.5", Austin, August 1, 1860, in the amount of $50.73 for "protection of the frontier in Capt. Tomlinsons Company." The state of Texas paid Captain Augustus A. Tomlinson's Company "F," Rio Grande Infantry, Frontier Regiment, rather than the U.S. government. Houston signs the verso of this treasury warrant seven months before Texas seceded and eight months before he was evicted from office for not supporting secession. Countersigned twice by Comptroller Clement R. Johns (one is struckthrough) and once by Treasurer Cyrus H. Randolph. A large cancellation "X" across the front slightly affecting Houston's signature. Minor repair to the verso.
