[Anson Jones] Assessment of Properties Owned by Anson Jones, the Last President of the Republic. Four pages, 8.5" x 14", bound at top, Galveston County, March 21, 1858. Offered here is "The Inventory and Appraisement of the Community Property belonging to the Succession of Anson Jones, decd," which lists thousands of acres of land in various Texas counties and a tally of his servants and various other items such as mules, horses, carriages, furniture, etc. Document is signed by Jones' widow, Mary, and is attested to by several appraisers. Docketed on verso of last page.

Anson Jones was a doctor, businessman, congressman, and the last president of the Republic of Texas. He is sometimes referred to as the "Architect of Annexation." After serving as minister to the United States, and then accepting the assignment to finish William H. Wharton's term in the senate, Jones declined candidacy for the vice presidency in the election of 1841, in which Houston again became president. Houston appointed Jones his secretary of state, a position he held from 1841 until 1844, when Jones was elected president of the Republic of Texas. He served in this position until Texas entered the Union in February 1846. Jones then retired to his home in Brazoria; ten years later, he was anxious to involve himself in politics again. In 1857, Jones believed that the legislature would send him to Washington as senator, but he received no votes. He committed suicide at Houston on January 9, 1858. Moderately age-toned, but a beautiful document, with large, attractive script. Fine condition.
