[Abraham Lincoln] Our American Cousin Souvenir Playbill reprinted shortly after President Lincoln's assassination. One page, 6" x 18.5", advertising the performance of Our American Cousin during which President Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot by John Wilkes Booth. With very minor tears; otherwise, near fine.

    More Information:

There were two versions of the My American Cousin playbill printed by Polkinhorn & Sons of Washington prior to the assassination of the president. The second version included eight lines of H. B. Phillip's song, "Honor To Our Soldiers". Following the assassination of the president, Polkinhorn reset the type for the original playbill and printed these post-assassination copies. There were several flaws in Polkinhorn's post-assassination copies that differentiate them from the original, including "Orchestra" instead of "Orchestra Chairs". Also, "Night 191" instead of the original "Night 196" and "whole number of nights 495" instead of the original "whole number of nights, 49 5" with a full letter space between the 9 and 5.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
