    Arranging a Presidential Reception for Army Officers to Take Place Just Before the Signing of the Emancipation Proclamation

    [Abraham Lincoln]: Letter Signed By John Nicolay and Edwin Stanton. 5" x 8" letter on "Executive Mansion" letterhead, Washington, D.C., December 29, 1862 written and signed by Presidential Secretary John G. Nicolay and sent to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. In full: "You will please notify the officers of the Army that the President will receive them on New Year's Day at half past eleven o'clock precisely." Stanton has endorsed below: "The Adjutant General will issue instructions in conformity with the foregoing notice. Edwin M. Stanton Sec of War". January 1, 1863 would be an important day as it was effective date for the Emancipation Proclamation. After the reception, the Cabinet met in a different room at the Executive Mansion where Lincoln signed the final draft of the Proclamation. Normal folds, bold signatures
