[19th Century U.S. Elections] John Bright Autograph Letter Signed to Lord John Russell. Four pages, 4.5" x 7", December 12, 1852. Bright, citing American electoral success, asks Lord Russell to work for English electoral reforms. Together with a 6" x 9.5" photo of Bright. Toned; fine.

    More Information:

After hearing complaints from some of his constituents, John Bright (1811-1889), an English politician, writes this letter expressing his disappointment with the current English election system: "Our present system is perfectly hideous. . . . I am disgusted with the scandalous immoralities of our system, & anxious for a change." In an attempt to influence the former British Prime Minister Lord Russell (1792-1878) to improve the English system, Bright cites the success of the American ballot system: "I have a brother now in the United States - He writes from Boston, - that nothing can exceed the tranquility & order with which the elections are conducted--the ballot works admirably. And surely in the country we are not--so obtuse and prejudiced as not to give a trial to what works so well elsewhere". Bright's appeal was written ten months after Lord Russell left office as prime minister of the United Kingdom.
