Description

Robert Emil Schulz: John Glenn Oil Portrait. A handsome 12.25" x 16" (sight size) oil on board portrait of the first American to orbit the earth. This wonderful painting portrays a smiling Glenn, head and shoulders, in a spacesuit with the fiery launch of his Mercury spacecraft Friendship 7 atop an Atlas LV-3B launch vehicle in the background. Signed "SCHULZ" at lower left. This portrait was submitted for consideration as the cover image had TIME Magazine chosen Glenn as their "Man of the Year." Framed to an overall 19.5" x 23". A great display piece for any space collection. Included with this lot is a catalog from Schulz's 1980 Memorial Exhibition at Grand Central Art Galleries. Excellent condition.

Robert Emil Schulz (1928-1978) was born in 1928 in Cliffside Park, New Jersey. A serious childhood illness kept him in bed for several years; his parents encouraged his talent for drawing and painting during this period. He graduated from Princeton with a degree in architecture; he studied painting and sculpture while there and was art editor for The Princeton Tiger. He studied under legendary realist Frank J. Reilly at the Art Students League. Schulz is known for his book and magazine illustration work, much of which was in the Western and Science Fiction genres.
