Description

Mark Twain: A Fine Oil Portrait Attributed to James Carroll Beckwith. A fine likeness in vintage frame. Pencil inscription on verso reads "Mark Twain. J. C. B." Beckwith (1852-1917) was born in Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Missouri, and was a distinguished portrait artist often mentioned in the company of Sergeant, Chase and Eakins. He is known to have done one other portrait of Twain in 1890, and this work bears some similarity to a photo taken of Twain on a 1902 visit to Hannibal. Sold previously by Heritage in a November 17, 2010 auction (lot 47217) where it brought $2390. 10" x 12", framed to 13.95" x 17.5".
