Description

John F. Kennedy: White House Presidential Portrait Study. This original charcoal drawing by presidential portrait artist Aaron Shikler measures 23.5" x 35", framed to 33" x 43". President Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy became acquainted with the work of the master portrait artist Aaron Shikler through the Peter Lawford branch of their family. Once Mrs. Kennedy discovered the work of Mr. Shikler, she commissioned various portraits of her children to be painted by the artist. Several of those works were featured in Sotheby's auction of The Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1996. So delighted was Mrs. Kennedy by the work of Mr. Shikler that when it came time for the discussion of her formal portrait that was to be hung in the White House, Mrs. Kennedy chose him as the painter. In 1970, Mrs. Kennedy again chose Mr. Shikler to paint the official portrait of the late president that was to hang in perpetuity in the White House. He produced five studies which he presented to Mrs. Kennedy, including the one here signed in red, "APS '70". This lot includes a 9.5" x 14" reproduction of the official portrait of President John F. Kennedy by Aaron Shikler, which today hangs in the White House. Fine condition.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
