Description
[Edgar Rice Burroughs]. James Allen St. John (American Artist, 1872-1957). Tarzan's Quest original dust jacket illustration, [circa 1936].Oil on canvas laid on board. Measures 19.75 x 29.5 inches (51 x 75 cm). Signed at lower left: J. Allen St. John.
This illustration was published as the first edition hardcover wrap-around dust jacket for Tarzan's Quest by Edgar Rice Burroughs (Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., 1936). Tarzan's Quest was intended as a sequel to the "Tarzan of the Apes" radio series, but Burroughs turned the radio script into a story which was originally serialized in six parts, as "Tarzan and the Immortal Men," published in The Blue Book Magazine, from October 1935 to March 1936. The first book edition was published in 1936 as Tarzan's Quest, becoming the nineteenth of the twenty-four books to feature the title character Tarzan.
The cover art for the wrap-around dust jacket by J. Allen St. John depicts the climactic conclusion of the story, when Kavandavanda has seized Jane, while Tarzan and Neil Brown are seen descending in their parachutes from the plane on their mission to rescue her. This story marks the final appearance of Jane as a major character in the series, and it stresses her resourcefulness and strength confronting jungle situations, and the artist masterfully acknowledges her consequential role as the central character in the dramatic composition.
Condition: Not framed. Minor wear to extreme corners of the board. Some tape residue and scrapes to board on verso. Under UV exam, there appear to be a few spots of inpaint along the top edge and in the sky at center. Faint 2-inch area of surface soiling in the sky at center.
Provenance: From the personal collection of Edgar Rice Burroughs
