George Armstrong Custer: A Contemporary Pen and Ink Drawing of Custer with his Officers and their Wives, Including Elizabeth Custer. This 9.5" x 7.75" drawing, with each individual identified, was done by George Daniel Wallace, an 1872 West Point graduate who was present at Little Big Horn and served until he was killed at Wounded Knee in 1890. The composition is copied from a well-known 1874 photo, a reproduction of which is included with the lot. Wallace is the second from the left, beside Custer himself. The attribution is confirmed by the handwriting in the individual identifications, which is a perfect match to known examples of Wallace's hand. A dossier of supporting materials is provided by the consignor of this most unusual original artwork. Excellent condition.

The records of Fort Abraham Lincoln establish that Orlando S. Goff photographed the group in front of the Custer quarters between January 1 and February 6, 1874, when fire destroyed the house. Several of the officers in the image (including Custer) were not consistently on duty at the fort prior from September 30, 1873 (when six companies of the 7th Cavalry joined the garrison and Custer assumed command of the post) to December 31, 1873.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
