    [Harper's Weekly] Original Civil War Sketches: General Egbert Viele. Pair of sketches done by artists in-the-field for publication in Harper's Weekly. 1) 9.5" x 12" watercolor of Viele at his desk, holding divider and studying a map. 2) 9.25" x 7" watercolor of General Viele's "Field & Staff" officers with Viele and two others identified below. Caption on verso reads: "Gen. Viele giving his last orders previous to disembarkation to the 48th N.J. Hilton Head Expedition". Two vertical folds. Viele was a veteran of the Mexican War and a civil engineer who supervised the construction of Central and Prospect Parks in New York. He participated at the siege of Fort Pulaski and briefly served as Military Governor of Norfolk, Virginia.
