    Description

[Harper's] Original Civil War Sketches: Encounters with the Enemy. Pencil sketches done by artists in-the-field, likely for publication in Harper's Weekly 1). Matted 8" x 6" sketch (mounted to board) showing a battle in a clearing, captioned "Sketched by Lieut Jno. G. Fay of Fred Townsends 3rd Regt. Vol" [the Albany Brigade], possibly depicting the Battle of Drewry's Bluff or Fort Fisher. 2) 10.25" x 8" sketch showing a brief encounter by a Union scouting party under the command of Captain Smith with a group of Rebel pickets. A ten-line inscription on verso describes the particulars. One of the Rebels waved a handkerchief. Thinking there was a Rebel camp nearby, the scouts proceeded another 2 miles but were unable to make contact. 3) 12" x 9.5" sketch of a Rebel ambush that resulted in the "Death of Rawlings".
