US M1858 Smooth Side Canteen with Period Ink ID on Cover to Captain Thomas R. Keenan, 56th Massachusetts Inf. Coarse brown wool cover, perfect on the front with Keenan's name and regiment in large period ink script. A bit difficult to read but readily decipherable with careful examination. Back face with one shallow dent and several holes worn through the cover apparently from heavy use. Retains a portion of the double thickness white linen sling with what actually appear to be blood stains at the top. Unmarked pewter spout. No stopper but the original string is present for attaching the spout. Keenan had a remarkable record, enlisting in the 13th Mass. 7/20/61, commissioned into 17th Mass. 2/10/62, commissioned into the 56th Mass. 4/20/64 and wounded at The Wilderness 5/6/64, doubtless wearing this canteen. He mustered out for wounds on 9/20/64 but subsequently was commissioned into the 2nd Mass. Heavy Arty on 12/2/64 and commissioned into the 17th Mass. on 2/27/65, finally mustering out 7/11/65. Nice canteen doubtless carried by this gallant officer when wounded at The Wilderness.

You reach a customer base that is in many ways completely unknown to the major auction houses, and your marketing to this base is as professional as one could hope for. As I continue to wind down my holdings.
