    Description

US M1842 Cartridge Box and Oval US Plate With Apparent Post-war Modification for use with metallic cartridges. Box in very fine sound, supple, complete condition. Just minimal surface finish crazing and a few small flakes. US plate untouched with nice patina. Marked with numeral "45" on back along with some Roman numeral hand carving. Maker marked on inside flap "E. Gaylord / Chicopee / Mass." The interior of the box has been completely lined with wool which is both stitched and riveted in place, one rivet missing. Doubtless for use with fixed metallic cartridges. A rare box in exceptionally nice condition and the first example we've encountered.
