US M1808 Cartridge Box. Although this is doubtless a militia example it conforms precisely to the regulation pattern which was the standard US cartridge box of the War of 1812. Constructed entirely of heavy black leather with decoratively cut edge on the bottom of the flap. Flap decorated with seven small brass head tacks (one missing) and a large brass head tack in the center of the flap where the latch tab attaches. Two belt loops on back, no provision for a sling although a series of stitched holes on the bottom and back indicate it may originally have had provisions for a sling which was likely linen. Interior with wooden block on the top bored for 26 .69 caliber cartridges. Lower portion of the box is a compartmented tin for tools, flints etc. which is accessed by a 3" X 4 1/4" flap which pulls out with accordion like thin leather sides. There is a four hole metal button on the top of the flap and another directly above it on the box which likely originally provided for closure of the flap. Really excellent condition. Very sound with some finish crazing but absolutely no flaking. The woven leather closure finial is likely a replacement, else complete and original in every respect. Although militia boxes of various forms from this period are often encountered, those that precisely conform to the 1808 pattern are quite scarce.
