    Description

    Superb Leather Powder Flask Given By Civil War Major Albert Richards Howe to His Son Author William Wirt Howe. A lovely leather flask measuring 9½" tall with a German silver spout marked with pseudo-hallmarks and a James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield, maker's mark. A German silver shield mounted to the body is engraved: "W. W. Howe/ From/ A. R. Howe". A. R. Howe enlisted as a private on May 26, 1862 and mustered in and out of service with various Massachusetts regiments, finally attaining the rank of major in the Massachusetts 5th Cavalry. After the war settled in Mississippi and served as a member of the Mississippi constitutional convention in 1868. A nice association piece with great history.
