Spangenberg Gunsmith, Tombstone, Arizona Territory: A Very Rare Leather Rifle Scabbard. George F. Spangenberg was a legendary Tombstone gunsmith whose shop on 4th Street also sold ammunition and leather accessories. Sometime after the OK Corral gunfight he closed up shop and move to Tucson, where he began working for a mining company. However, it seems he had made some enemies. One night Spangenberg had an altercation in a local bar, and several days later four men came looking for him and confronted him in a tool shed where he was working. The details are a bit sketchy, but Spangenberg killed three of the men inside the toolshed, the fourth just outside, and grabbed the next stage out of town. Today a recreation of his gun shop operates as a tourist attraction on 4th, just across the street from its original location.

Leather gun accessories sold by Spangenberg are extremely rare. Authorities with whom we consulted remember seeing a couple of holsters, but never a rifle scabbard. The example offered here is in very good condition, with only typical moderate surface wear from use, and no damage. All four leather attachment loops are present, and there is an attractive embossed border around the open end and underside. The logo "Spangenberg/Gunsmith/Tombstone A.T." is deeply stamped on both sides, with "35 R" stamped below each logo. Length 36.5".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
