Scrimshaw Carved Pre-Revolutionary War Powder Horn, 1771. This wonderful horn features the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom as used by King George III and the succeeding Hanoverian kings with the King's German domains noted in the fourth quarter of the arms. Below the Royal Arms are two artillery pieces facing outward. Above each barrel are cannon balls, ramrods and swabs. Below the cannon is a large three-storied building with a central tall cupola flanked by four smaller cupolas. Also pictured is a three-masted man-of-war at full-sail. The horn displays the initials I*E and RE followed by the date 1771. Very lightly scratched between the two sets in initials is the date 1799. The integral throat leads to a series of graduated raised rings ending in the spout. The base appears to be original and held in place by four metal pins. The horn measures 15 inches from spout to base.
Condition: Very fine with a wonderful, even patina.
