Fine York County, Pennsylvania Screw Tip Powder Horn, Circa 1825. 12" overall with quintessential color and curve. Carrying staple properly affixed near tip, the one on the base missing but original holes visible. Threaded 2 3/4" long screw tip fits perfectly with no play on the male threads on the horn. Just a few old, minor chips on the turnings and a few minor age hairlines with no loss near the spout. Two ring turnings at spout, base affixed with five wooden pins. The base with classic chip carving and ring turnings, was originally fitted with a small threaded wooden plug which is now missing, although the female threads are present. Age hairline with no loss halfway across the base, minor. The base exhibits rich deep patina. Fine example of what is doubtless the most desirable generic American powder horn form ever produced.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
