1766 Engraved Powder Horn. 13" powder horn with scrimshawed designs and inscription reading: "Moses Malary His Horn A.D. 1766". Two sailing ships or schooners appear above that, flanked with checkerboard and cross-hatched geometric designs. Sailboats and fish appear on a panel below the central inscription. There is one horizontal age crack extending from the bottom of the horn to the last "N" in "HORN". The screw-eye, securing screws for the end-piece, chain and brass measure are later additions. The brass measure likely dates from the pre-Civil War period, perhaps the 1830's. Malary may have served in the Revolutionary War, as we are informed an Internet search brings up someone with that surname in the D.A.R. Mellow patina ... a solid artifact of the colonial period.

    Estimate: $700 - up.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
