Description

Powder Horn, circa Late 18th or Early 19th Century. Originating in America, the powder horn is approximately 13" long with the original 3.25" diameter wood plug. The plug has a large metal staple in the center with an attached leather strip, 12" in length and 0.25" to 0.5" in diameter. The wooden base features designs of a geometrical nature.

Engraved between the letters "I" and "M" is a simplified square and compass, one of the prevailing symbols of Freemasonry. Directly above appear the letters "A" and "M" placed amid flowering plants. Near the plug is a crescent moon bearing a human face in profile and several six-pointed stars. Other engraved images include an Indian warrior resting a musket on his shoulder with a powder horn hanging by his side, a tomahawk and knife tucked into his belt; a bare-breasted mermaid combing her hair with one hand, a chalice in the other; an eagle with spread wings resting upon a crown; and various floral motifs. A superb example of early American folk art.
