Description

Cartridge Box and Canteen of Levi Weise of the 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Weise, from Berks County Penna., enlisted as a private in the 93rd Penna. on 9/18/61 in Company B, and mustered out as a Captain on 6/27/65. Weise rose through the ranks being promoted to Corporal 9/22/61, Sergt. 6/15/62, 1st Sergt. 7/1/62, Sergt. Major 7/1/64, 1st lieutenant 10/22/64 and Captain 1/23/65. The 93rd was one of the more heavily fought Pennsylvania infantry regiments being engaged in The Peninsular Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, The Wilderness, Opequan, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek and Petersburg. The regiment lost 172 men killed an mortally wounded. The .58 caliber cartridge box and sling is in excellent sound condition. Just some finish crazing and minor flaking, the box entirely untouched, with Weise's initials inside above the tool pouch. Retains both original plates with nice untouched patina, original tins along with six paper wrapped .58 caliber that were found in the top section of one tin. A very nice Civil War cartridge box and sling, obviously used by Weise during his term of service as an enlisted man / NCO. M1858 smooth side canteen with coarse brown wool cover also excellent with a few small holes in the cover and one dent, obviously the result of hard honest use. Retains the original linen sling, also showing hard honest use. Original stopper with a portion of the chain, pewter spout, unmarked. Canteen is stenciled on one side with a faded blue 6th Corps badge overlaid with "93" and "P. V. below, both in white paint. The reverse of the canteen is stenciled in white paint "Co. B" and Weise's initials "L. W.". Totally untouched and an exceptional ID'd canteen. Also included is Weise's NCO commission to the rank of Sergeant Major, perfect condition. Great group identified to a soldier who served through the entire war with a heavily engaged unit.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
