    Description

A Texas Related Powder Horn and Powder Flask. Comprising: 1.) Approximately 6 ½-inch horn with wooden base. Carved on one side: "Sgt. John Marr / 1853 / Texas Volunteers"; and carved on the other with an eagle over a five-pointed star with the caption "Texas Forever". The horn is attributed to John Wesley Marr (1830-1909) but further research is necessary. 2.) Copper powder flask measuring approximately 6 ¾-inches tall with slightly offset five-pointed stars embossed on either side. No maker markings. Loading spring still functions. Stars may indicate an association with the Republic of Texas. Further research needed.

Condition: 1.) Very good. A minor hairline crack pierces the eagle's head. 2.) Good. A few shallow dents. Lacking one lanyard ring.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
