    Fine and Rare Cased Rosewood and Relief-Carved Ivory Presentation New York Police Department Baton Presented to Captain John Cooney December 27, 1900. Hilt of American eagle motif on perch, the carved grip with maple leaf motifs, the pommel with floral and leaf detailing, repeated at juncture with varnished rosewood shaft. Base of shaft repeating relief carved maple leaves. Inscribed on gold shield-shaped plaque mounted on rosewood: Presented to/Captain/John Cooney by members of/the 20th. Precinct/New York Police/Dec. 27,1900. Tan silk tassel and woven cord attached to hilt. With custom leather-covered wood hard case, with tin latches. Lined in red and blue satin, cradled in two mounts beneath blue satin in base. The lid interior red silk fabric embossed at center in gold: S.A. French/108 West 28 St. N.Y. Overall length of case, 29 1/4 inches by 7 1/8-inches by 3 3/4-inches. Overall length of baton, 24-inches.
    Condition: Fine. Mellow patina to ivory. Minor handling marks. Light wear to silk. Wear to case exterior and light fraying to blue silk in base.
