Civil War M1858 Smooth Side Canteen and NCO Sash with Period Paper Label Identifying it to Sgt. James Carroll, Co. C, 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Period ink script tag with some scuffing affixed to the front of the canteen. Although some information is difficult to decipher, Carroll's name and regiment are very clear. Coarse brown wool cover about perfect just showing some honest use. Double thickness 7/8" wide linen sling very sound and intact just showing honest use. Unmarked pewter spout. Original stopper attached with string. The loose weave worsted wool NCO sash is full length (actually one of the longest we've ever seen) with 8" wool tassels. Sash shows considerable honest use with some scattered holes and edge nicks but very sound with bright color. The 52nd Penna. mustered into US service in November 1861, serving until the end of the war. Carroll enlisted 10/17/61 and mustered out for disability 10/30/62, having been promoted to sergeant on 8/5/62. The regiment was engaged at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Seven Pines, White Oak Swamp and Malvern Hill during Carroll's term of service. Exceptionally ID'd and a very nice set.

    Estimate: $1,200 - up.
