    Description

    Carved Powder Horn by Calderwood.
    Overall length approximately 15-inches. The stopper an old brass cartridge case. Tip of horn carved with circular floral images and swan or duck. Neck is serrated above collar, both with circles and cross-hatched patterns above a signature reading: X MARK X CALDERWOOD. Additional carved figures of hunters standing and in a canoe and shooting rifles at what appear to be fish or maritime mammals. This scene includes the image of an anchor. Body of horn also carved somewhat crudely with picture of a two story house and additional game birds. Decorations toward the bottom are another anchor and a sailing vessel. Painted wood base to horn. Pierced bottom edge of horn with tied leather thong joined to very old brown leather strap (partial) attached to neck. A William Calderwood was an American gunmaker in Philadelphia c1800.

    Conditon: Very good to fine. Light age wear and patina.
