    Description

William Henry Jackson. Rare William Henry Jackson 1902 JA Ranch Roundup Lithograph. This William Henry Jackson lithograph depicting a roundup of cattle on the JA Ranch in 1901 is the most famous and desirable of all early Texas cattle drive images. The JA ranch was named by cattleman Charles Goodnight in honor of his European financial partner, John Adair. The JA, situated in the Palo Duro Canyon just south and east of Amarillo in the Texas panhandle is one of Texas' most famous ranches. The lithograph records a roundup of two-year-old steers that were sold to early cowman Corbin Morse of Rapid City, South Dakota on August 1, 1901. Note: William Henry Jackson was an American born in 1843. After serving in the American Civil War, he headed west and settled in Omaha, Nebraska. He opened a portrait photography studio with his brother. In 1870, Jackson went on an expedition across Wyoming to the Yellowstone Lake area with geologist, Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden. The images he took were the first photographs of Yellowstone to be published and helped the area to become the first National Park in 1872. Jackson was also the first to photograph prehistoric Native American dwellings in Mesa Verde, Colorado. After these expeditions, he settled in Denver and worked as a commercial landscape photographer and published his work as postcards. William Henry Jackson died in 1942.
