Willem Blaeu map of Saxon Britain, " BRITANNIA ANGLO-SAXONVM HEPTARCHIA" , Amsterdam, circa 1645, 21.5" x 17.25". A highly collectible hand tinted engraving from the heyday of Dutch cartography showing Britain divided into the Dark Age kingdoms of the Saxon Heptarchy. Flanking the map proper are two registers, each composed of seven smaller panels. On the left are fanciful images of notable Saxon kings; to the right are vignettes from Saxon history. The whole is rendered in a richly colored high Baroque style. Light browning as expected, a few tiny isolated stains and one small repaired split along the lower border. Fine condition. In gilt wood frame, 31.5" x 27".
