Wilcox Silverplate Co. Black Man Cigar Case. This exceedingly unusual item, circa late 19th century, shows a black man sitting in a cracked egg from which his feet protrude. The subject, wearing a broad-rimmed hat, presents a tray. As a functional cigar case, the egg holds stogies, the tray is for spent matches, and the man's hat doubles as a striker-cum-match holder. A raised medallion on the underside of the base is stamped, "QUADRUPLE.PLATED WILCOX SILVERPLATE". A well-known Connecticut firm, Wilcox was absorbed by the International Silver Co. in 1898. Some flatness to the maker's mark, else excellent condition. 9" high.
