    Description

Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842: Cast Iron Commemorative Boundary Marker. Undoubtedly unique relic related to the disputed border between the United States and Canada which, to a large degree, was resolved by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842. It is a cast iron obelisk, approximately 78" tall. There is a ball at the top and a hitching post ring. The sides measure 6" across at their widest point. The four sides are inscribed: "Lt. Col: I. B. B. Estcourt, H.B.M. Comssr. [Her Britannic Majesty's Commissioner]/ Treaty of Washington/ Boundary Augst 9th 1842./ Albert Smith. U. S. Comssr."

The treaty ended the Aroostock War between Maine and Canada. It dealt with jurisdiction in cases involving individuals who committed crimes while under orders of a foreign government. Issues related to the African slave trade were also agreed upon. The disputed border with Oregon was left unresolved until the signing of the Oregon Treaty of 1846.

The marker was supposedly sold by the U. S. Government around the turn of the 20th century. It is also believed that it was located along the Canadian border in the northwest (formerly the Oregon Territory). Given its weight and size, it is subject to local pickup or Third Party shipping.
