    Description

Walter Tittle Signed Etching "Lady Washington's Levee". This fine art print is signed in the lower right by Tittle who has noted on the lower left "8th trial proof" with "2nd State" penciled on the mat in another hand. This was issued in 1932 as one in a series by the George Washington Memorial Association for the Bicentennial Pageant of George Washington and printed on paper watermarked with the Washington coat of arms by Henry Carling of London. The image shows George & Martha Washington on Christmas day, 1790, as the leaders of the new republic gather in Philadelphia to honor them. In excellent condition, 10" x 13.5" image on ivory laid paper, matted to 14" x 19" (some soiling to mat). Tittle was an Ohio-born painter and etcher, mostly a portraitist, a contributor to Life, Saturday Evening Post, and Harper's Weekly, and is represented by seven works in the National Portrait Gallery. By the way, the word "levee" as used here is an archaic term defined as "The concourse of persons who visit a prince or great personage in the morning."
