    Description

U.S. House of Representatives: Circa 1857 Chair.
The chair in this lot was used in Congress from 1857 to 1873. The chair and its matching desk [desk not included] were designed by Thomas U. Walter, the architect of the Capitol. His renovations culminated in the enlarged dome surmounted by a statue of a Native American princess, emblematic of Liberty. Chairs and desks were ordered as part of an 1857 renovation of the House, overseen by Montgomery C. Meigs. There were 241 Congressmen at that time. When 11 states seceded from the Union, the number of members was reduced to 175. Excess furniture was then distributed to other government buildings and sold to the public. The desk was manufactured by Doe & Hazelton of Boston while the chairs were made by Bembe & Kimble located at 20 Broadway in Manhattan. This chair is 35" tall, 21" wide and 22" deep. It has been reupholstered in brown leather a good many years ago. The top crest is a little loose, the result of wood shrinkage over time. It is otherwise sound and has not been refinished, as far as we can tell. Unlike other examples, it does not have brass castors. We include Brady CDVs of two Union soldiers seated in chairs in the Brady studio, one of which matches the one we are offering. That said, this is not the "Brady chair", but it does have a Lincoln connection!

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
