    U. S. Civil War Flag: 36-Star Hand-Crafted Flag with Unusual Star Pattern. 80" x 47" thin cotton flag with 36 stars arranged in a most unusual pattern (Great Medallion with six stars in each corner and an additional star bottom center). The stars appear on both sides of the canton. Thirteen of the stars have initials stitched on them, presumably the names of the ladies who made the piece. There are four brass rings sewn to the hoist. In addition, two red cords with purple & red tassels are attached to the top corner. It is hemmed on three sides and entirely hand-stitched. There are some light stains in the canton, overall aging with some fading. There are scattered small holes, a 7" tear on the fourth white stripe, loss to the bottom red stripe and two old repairs. The condition is very good overall.

It was purchased by the consignor from a fellow military collector at a local show in the Midwest. The seller said he had acquired the flag many years back in Illinois and that he had seen a newspaper article about it which told the story of some ladies in Rushville, Illinois who had made it. A trip to the Schuyler County Jail Museum in Rushville by the consignor uncovered a similar flag which had been made by the ladies of Rushville and presented to the 119th Illinois Regiment. That example, too, was signed by the makers with their initials. A significant find.
