Silver Tablespoon made by Silversmith & American Patriot Paul Revere, Circa 1790-1800 With a 3" long oval bowl the spoon offered here is marked "Revere" on the back and has slightly more than 2 oz. of silver. The downturned rounded-end handle is engraved with the monogram "DMS" in foliate script initials and are those of a prominent colonial Massachusetts couple, Daniel Sargent (1731-1806) and Mary Turner Sargent (1743-1813), who lived in Boston in 1770s. Daniel Sargent was a successful merchant and Mary Turner Sargent was born in a house built by her grandfather that later was made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel House of the Seven Gables. She was also the subject of a 1763 painting by John Singleton Copley, who is perhaps best known for his later portrait of Paul Revere.A more exacting date of manufacture is found in this entry taken from the Revere Family Papers housed at the Massachusetts Historical Society. The original commission shown below, found recorded in Paul Revere's Day Book on August 28, 1783, was for a set of twelve tablespoons.

In 1938 a six piece set of these spoons were purchased from the Sargent estate by George Gebelein, a noted silversmith who has been dubbed by many in the industry as the Paul Revere of the twentieth century. Although Gebelein died in 1945, his family continued his legacy until 1986, when they sold the family business. By 1989, some of Gebelein's personal collection found its way to auction in New York (Christies June 3rd, 1989, Lot 301).
