    Rare Colt First Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver and Holster Attributed to George Leist, Indian Fighter and Monterey California Constable.
    Serial no. 2686, .44 caliber, 7 1/2-inch barrel with single line New York address. German silver front sight and dovetailed rear sight. Oval cylinder index stops. Cylinder with etched Indian battle scene. Brass squareback triggerguard and gripstrap assembly. Varnished "Slim-Jim" walnut grips. Contained in original black leather holster with single belt loop and braided leather thong. Sold together with original newsclipping from the Seaside News Sentinel, dated February 7, 1952 with a summary of George Leists' career as an Indian fighter and Monterey Constable. Also included are photostatic copies of two U.S. Army, Registers of Enlistments, 1798-1914 and 1806-1916, showing George Leist on both registers and listing his birth as about 1867 and age of enlistment as 21. The news article states he enlisted in Company D of the U.S. 1st Infantry in 1889 and was stationed at Angel Island. The enlistment documents list 1890 as a date and Ft. Mason in San Francisco as to location of unit. According to Leist, he was sent with the U.S. 1st Infantry to the Dakotas to help surpress the Sioux uprising in 1891. He contracted pneumonia while in the field and was returned to San Francisco in March, 1891. He worked in numerous jobs in the Monterey California peninsula and reports he was a Constable of Monterey for a time. A rare Colt revolver with a documented history to a California soldier. Condition: Fair to good for this model. Metal showing an overall brown patina with scattered wear and minor pitting present. One frame screw crudely replaced with a metal pin. Triggerguard and gripstrap showing wear and patina. Grips with wear and some shrinkage. Action good. Holster with wear, scuffs and lower seam separations. End of holster with lateral cut to tip. Loop on back with heavy wear. Minor checking to exterior.
