    Description

Prideaux John Selby. Common Buzzard, Female - Plate VI - Uncolored. Engraving from the first edition of Selby's Illustrations of British Ornithology (London: 1821-1834). Very good condition.

    More Information:

Watermarked "J Whatman / 1821 / Turkey Mills" (note the additional "s" in this variant Whatman watermark instead of the usual "Turkey Mill" watermark). In generally very good condition with mild toning and a few spots of foxing; some stains at the top edge caused by tape on the reverse. A couple of small chips to the right side. An inoffensive wrinkle to the right margin, apparently caused in the printing process. Although some Selby prints were sold uncolored, this may have been a proof. Light penciled notations. 21.25 x 26 inches.

Prideaux John Selby (1788-1867) was a British gentleman landowner and artist who, as a boy, had studied the habits of birds and collected them as specimens, eventually using them as portrait subjects. The prints which comprise his landmark Illustrations of British Ornithology, originally published in Edinburgh between 1821 and 1833, were the first to depict British birds in actual size. His technique is said to have been partially inspired by Audubon, from whom he received personal art lessons in 1826. Selby is considered one of the great masters of 19th century bird art, and we are proud to offer superb prints by this great artist.
