    Description

Trio of Bernard Picart Engravings Depicting Scenes From Classical Mythology. Plate imprint 10 inches x 14 inches, overall 12 inches x 18 inches. Extracted from the Temple of the Muses (Neu-Eröfneter Musen-Tempel), Amsterdam: Zachariah Chatelain, 1733.

    More Information:

Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was a French engraver known chiefly for his book illustrations. His work is characterized by a minute attention to detail. The three engravings offered here include "Leander Swims Over the Hellespont to Meet His Mistress Hero", a religious work entitled "The Deluge", and the ornately engraved half-title page from the original book from which these marvelous illustrations appeared. The paper has toned, especially along the edges with some modest scattered foxing, and "The Deluge" has a small section missing at the lower right corner which doesn't affect the central image, otherwise all are in good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
