Raven Audubon Royal Octavo Print. Plate number 224 features the Raven. An old male, looking very agitated, is pictured seated on a Thick Shell Bark Hickory tree. Four pages of text accompany this print. The raven is a power icon in many cultures from its appearance in Poe's musings to its role as a symbol of death. Lafontane said this of the raven, "La loi du plus fort est toujours la meilleure!" Translated this line reads, "The law of the strongest is always best." This is the line Audubon applies to the character of the crow, who always gets his way, even with humans!
