Joseph Wolf Elephant Folio Print: Felis Shawiana; Shaw's Cat. This image is from J. Wolf and J. Smit's A Monograph of the Felidae or the Family of Cats, (London 1878-1883), which described and illustrated all existing species of cats known at that time. Many say it is still the most beautiful and detailed book on the subject, even today. Wolf did many illustrations and lithographs of different animal families, including birds, however, his work on the cat family is considered his finest. The animal featured here is the Shaw's Cat, native to Turkistan and Yarkland. The image shows one of the species as it walks through the snowy plains of its native region. The page of text which accompanies this print states that it is about the size of a domestic cat, along with many other facts and observations.Auction Info
