    Description

Johnny Baker: An Important, Possibly Unique 3-Sheet Poster, Circa 1889. Our expert consultant, Paul Fees, had never encountered this poster before, nor had the curator of the Denver Museum, repository of perhaps the most extensive collection of Johnny Baker items. Indeed, this poster predates by at least four years the earliest poster in their collection. Our research failed to turn up an example in a public collection. This is the same example which appeared in a 2010 poster auction, which marked the only recorded appearance of this design at auction.

Baker was of course one of the major Buffalo Bill's Wild West stars, deserving of featured status in this giant 43" x 83" poster. According to Paul Fees, the printer's logo dates it to 1889. A French tax stamp in the upper left-hand corner indicates that it saw use during a European tour.

Not surprisingly, such large three-piece posters from the show tend to have been much less likely to survive. For a collector with the right wall space to display it, this Johnny Baker example offers bold, colorful display appeal, rarity, and great importance in the category of Buffalo Bill's Wild West posters. It is in beautiful condition, with several very minor tears mitigated by professional linen-backing.
