    Description

John Gould (1804-1881). Two Prints: Myiophoneus Insularis. [and:] Podoces Hendersoni.

Two hand-colored lithographs from Gould's Birds of Asia (London: 1850-1883). In very good condition with general toning to both. Both have creases and slight tearing to lower right corners, a result of careless removal of mounting tape. Some smudges to Podoces Hendersoni. Both have mounting tape to reverse. Both have light penciled notations. Both measure 14.5 x 21.5 inches.

More Information: John Gould (1804-1881), sometimes referred to as "the British Audubon" because of the impact and profound influence of his work, was a remarkably prolific artist and publisher of ornithological works. Gould studied taxidermy as a teenager, and became so expert at it that he became the first curator at the Zoological Society of London. He began drawing birds, and with the assistance of several artists (such as his wife Elizabeth and Edward Lear), his publications contained illustrations not only beautiful but scientifically accurate. His favorite work, A Monograph of the Trochilidæ, or Family of Humming Birds, its plates highlighted with metallic iridescent colors, has been called Gould's "masterpiece" and "among the most beautiful of Victorian illustrated books" - "a feast of beauty and a source of wonder" (Sitwell). Gould left an unparalleled body of work, and we are proud to here offer many of his beautiful imperial folio prints.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
