    Description

Folk Art Minstrels Trade Sign on Stretcher. Minstrel shows are a distinctly American entertainment form, and flourished from 1830 to 1920. This oil on canvas measures 12" x 14" and is titled "Waugh's Minstrels". It depicts a performer in a checkered shirt, loose collar, Knickerbocker-style pants and striped stockings. The canvas has the stamped name of a Boston retailer. It likely dates circa 1860. It is in very good condition, save for one small patch that covers a background puncture. It is signed "W. H. Hard. Ptr" and should clean up very nicely.
